4Review of 2.0 Megapixel IP Security Camera
By Henrik
Received this item well within the promised time. I live in Sweden, and it was shipped from the US. The only problem being that I had to pay Swedish taxes on collecting it from the post office. :-( The item was well packaged and arrived in undamaged condition. On opening the box, the camera appeared on first handling to be well built and good quality. Very solid and good finish aluminium body, rather heavy.I have another 300K bullet camera bought from DealExtreme and as the Heivision camera appears quite similar on photo, I assumed that it would be the same size. However the Heivision camera is quite a bit bigger than the other camera I've got, which came as a surprise when I opened the box. This significantly influenced the Wife Acceptance Factor, so it requried some wheeling and dealing before I was allowed to set it up outside my house, even if it maked it "look like fort knox"... :-)The supplied CD did not match the installation instructions on paper, it said to run the Search NVS from the CD, but that whole directory was missing. So I had to find and download the "Search NVS" software from some other site. Once done, and IP configured, i could access the camera setup web page. Next I could download the OCX from the link on the camera logon page, and then I could access the live video feed. So far so good. The live picture quality is very good, the same if you take stills using the motion detection. My (high) expectations are very well fulfilled in the picture quality area. During daytime, it provides a nice and sharp colour image, when it gets dark it switches to Black/White IR mode. The pictures are quite sharp, and if you would look at them in the way you would judge the pic quality of a DSLR, you would say that they are "over-processed", and have too much sharpening. However, for a security cam, I think it is just perfect. It allows you to read license plates and recognnize faces from some distance away.Like all similar cameras I have used there is an issue with exposure time, especially when it is dark. When objects are moving before the camera, they appear "smeared out". That said, the "smearing" of the Heivision camera is less than my other IP camera as well as an MS webcam I have set up. So it appears like it has a reasonably sensitive sensor allowing shorter exposure times that the other cams I've got.I was hoping to use this camera together with the iSpy software ([....]), which I am already successfully using for the other camera. I tried using Fiddler and WireShark to analyse the network communication and find the "camera URL" used by the live view OCX, so that I could set it up in iSpy. After having looked closely at the logs for a few hours I gave up. The communication looks significantly different from that of my previous IP camera (Maygion). So I have not been able to figure it out, maybe someone smarter than me can understand how to do it, or it is not possible.I have also set up the built-in motion detection in the camera to FTP images to my server on movement. It works to some extent, I do get images when something moves in front of the camera, but some images are corrupt (empty files or half of the picture solid grey), and there are a lot of "false alarm" pictures, even with sensitivity set to medium (3). In some cases it does not react on motion and I get some occasional night time picture exposed according to daytime settings (very dark and IR not being used).Once the motion detection has been triggered, it gives a few pictures but then seems unresponsive to further motion for some 10-20 secs after that. Maybe it has a limited buffer and takes some time to empty it over FTP??? There is a reference in the documentation to SD card memory being used as a buffer in case it is installed. So I am considering trying an SD card and see if it will be different. The specs say that there is an SD slot, but it is not visible as the aluminium body is completey sealed and weatherproof. I assume that I will have to unscrew the back cover to get access to it.Because of the problems mentioned above, I took a look at the built-in logs in the camera web pages, and it appears that it restarts every few minutes as I get "Power On" messages in the log. I have been in contact with the Heivision support guys about this issue, and they are currently trying to help me, indicating that it may get fixed by a firmware upgrade. Let's hope for the best, at least the support guys seem quite responsive and willing to help so far. With this good picture quality, and if the problems mentioned can be resolved, it would maybe be a "5". If I could get iSpy connectivity working too, it would definitely be a "5". If the problems stay, then "4" is maybe a bit too high rating...Henrik-------------------------------------------Update 6 Feb 2012:The support guy helped me update the firmware and change some camera settings using a PC remote control session. This was about a week ago, and the positive thing is that since then I have had less spontaneous reboot:s and it seems to be generally more stable. The negative is that the reboots still happen but less frequently. Still also have problems with corrupt pictures on FTP on motion. The corrupt files are easy to spot in the file list as they are typically 1k or 0k size instead of the around 1 Mb for OK ones. Also, it still happens that the camera gets unresponsive and stops snapping pictures on motion until you reboot it.To sum it up, this is a camera with great build quality, great picture quality and great features on paper. Unfortunately, the firmware seems very unstable with severe bugs, or maybe there is a hardware problem in my unit? I would really like to get it to work, but at the moment I feel a bit pessimistic as the firmware upgrade only helped marginally.Because it still is so unreliable, I am taking down the previous rating of 4 stars to 2 stars...-------------------------------------------Update 26 May 2012:With the latest firmware and adding an SD card for image buffering it now works pretty OK. remaining issues:- Occasional empty picture on FTP, it seems that this happens at the time when it switches from colour to b/w at dusk/dawn.- Using the built-in motion detection, it is a bit difficult to find the right balance between sensitive enough to pick up relevant activity and not too many "false alarm" pictures.Picking up the rating back to 4 again.Henrik
